Tragedy struck the Ritchie County Humane Society
in Harrisville, WV on January 13 when an overnight
fire burned one of the shelter buildings to the
ground killing over 70 cats and dogs. Larger
dogs housed in a different building were
uninjured. The cause of the fire is still
unknown.
Animal care supplies were
desperately needed and Animal Lifeline volunteers
were quick to respond. Two heroes new to our
team are Arline Sossian and Lou Arce, a retired NJ
State Police officer, who took three days to
travel to West Virgina to deliver supplies.
Special thanks also go to the Bucks County SPCA
and Doylestown Animal Medical Clinic for helping
us fill the truck with crates, food and medical
supplies.
Ritchie County is already
making plans to rebuild and our outreach team
intends to go back down in May or June to roll up
their sleeves and help this shelter recover from
their devastating loss. When the trip is
scheduled, we'll let you know what supplies and
manpower will be needed!
 Thank
you, Lou & Arline!

Our
Pet Adoption 101
class, held at Delaware Valley College last Monday, was
enjoyed by rescues and adopters alike! Special
thanks to Kim Saunders of PetFinder.com for traveling to
Doylestown to share her knowledge about the
adoption process and animal welfare. It truly
meant SO much to the Animal Lifeline outreach team
members who attended the class to be able to share their
stories and experiences with Kim!
If you were
unable to attend Pet
Adoption 101 but would still like to have Kim's
book, The
Adopted Dog Bible, copies are available for
purchase at The Animal Lifeline Thrift Shop.
We
hope to see many of you at our next
workshop!

Myth Busters: The Truth about Common Dog
Myths
Myths
regarding dogs, their behavior and their training have
been told for centuries. We have all heard these
phrases before...but are they true?:
- Tugging
makes dogs aggressive.
- If
my dog goes out the door first, he is
dominant.
- Bones
are dangerous for dogs to chew.
- To
show a dog that you are in charge, pin them until they
"submit".
- Don't
let your dog sleep on your bed or couch.
- If
you train dogs with food they won't respect
you.
- Dogs
that bite will always bite.
- All
dogs can be behaviorally rehabilitated.
- Purebred
dogs cannot be found in shelters.
- A
dog wagging its tail is a happy, friendly
dog.
- An old dog can't
learn new tricks.
During
this workshop, we will present the facts behind some of
the most common myths about our canine
friends!

Meet Leon! Animals
are so smart!
Do
you think Leon knew that the garage he wandered into to
get out of the bitter cold was owned by an Animal
Lifeline
volunteer?
Leon has been at the Animal Lifeline Thrift Shop for
about a month. During the first two weeks, we held
him while checking to see if he had been reported
missing, because we couldn't believe someone wasn't out
looking for this sweet
boy.
Now Leon is officially looking for a new home. He is
neutered and up-to-date on shots. If you would
like to meet our friendly, playful friend, please stop
in at the Animal Lifeline Thrift Shop during store
hours! |
We would like to
thank all of the volunteers from the Delaware Valley
College Animal Lifeline Club, Leigh Siegfried of
Opportunity Barks and Professor Brynna Donnelly for
their tremendous outreach efforts in Bamberg, South
Carolina, a very
impoverished community with rampant homeless animal
overpopulation.
These
volunteers spent a week over their holiday break at the
beginning of January at the Mary
Ann Morris Animal Society. Students did
their own fundraising for months before the trip so they
could afford to rehabilitate the existing site and leave
it in the best condition possible. In addition,
Animal Lifeline donated a vanload full of food, medical
supplies, leashes, collars, crates, building materials,
and even a refrigerator.
Under
the guidance of Brynna & Leigh, students worked
to replace plumbing, fix kennels, upkeep shelter &
care for animals. Thank you to these fabulous
volunteers and to everyone who donated money and
supplies that allowed them to accomplish so much on this
outreach trip!
These young people are not the
heroes of tomorrow, they are the heroes of right
now!
